The development of Lunawood
Lunawood’s unique, non-stop production process and the company’s high-quality products have made it a market leader in the field. It sounds simple, but simple it has not been.
Production bursts
A market study carried out in 1998 proposed that the thermo-wood market would burst and it would become a new hit. At the same time, several small companies were producing products for the market without having the proper knowledge of raw materials and thermo-processing skills. The result was often a substandard product with unequal quality. These products were put into distribution and launched onto the market until finally the cold facts had to be faced: the product could not be used for anything. This ruined thermo-wood’s image for years to come and several companies that had produced the product simply died out.
Snags along the way
At the time, Lunawood was building its own plant and began developing its production processes. When the company began operations in 2002, it was the world’s largest producer, but had no customers. The same problem seemed to plague all of the companies in the field and many thermo-processing plants were closed. Despite all of this, Lunawood did not give up.
Where there’s will, there’s a way…
Although the field had a bad reputation and it was nearly impossible to negotiate with buyers, the founders of the world’s largest thermo-wood plant did not give up. They believed in the quality of the products based on the process they had developed. Their unyielding attitude and persistent work in sales resulted in their first reference at the Housing Fair in Kotka in 2002, where Lunawood products were put to use. According to a report received after the fair, the product is durable and possesses high quality. That’s just what Lunawood thermo-wood is supposed to be!
Into the sunny horizon…
This was the beginning of long, slowly accelerating recovery and growth. During that time, Lunawood created all new credibility for the product and a standard for the ‘thermo-wood’ concept and Lunawood quality. It required two years of hard work, immense investments, and almost barbaric faith in the product and its possibilities to succeed.
Finally, in 2005, the company saw light at the end of the tunnel and in 2006, the company expanded operations to the Hammaslahti plants in Joensuu. Although Lunawood had already survived the valley of death, the company’s desire to produce even better, widely desired thermo-wood lives on.
Global markets open up
Thanks to our wide, diverse selection of products and, above all, to the high quality and long life of our products, the global markets opened up for Lunawood. We currently export to nearly 30 countries and Lunawood is amidst a period of strong growth. The company’s aim is to maintain its leader position as an expert and producer of thermo-wood in the future as well.
